Heartbeats Book 2
It took a few moments for Noelle to digest the scene before her. Seeing Ben on bended knee right in her doorway, dropping a surprise proposal was the most unlikely outcome ever.
Half of her wished she could just slam the door on his hangdog expression. The other half wanted to scream at him to go back to his blow-job giving assistant. How could she ever get that picture out of her memory?
The answer was, she couldn’t. Every time she closed her eyes and thought of Ben, she saw him with that bimbo's head bobbing up and down his cock.
"Am I supposed to take you seriously?" Noelle asked, arms folded and glare in place as she stared down at her ex. "You come here holding out a ring as if that could make things right, is that it?"
"I just want you back," Ben said deeply. "I made a mistake with Heather. Look, we've never even had sex so technically, I still haven't cheated on you. She just gave me a couple of blowjobs, sweetheart. It never meant anything. I've been going through so much stress with work, and…."
"Ben, stop," Noelle said, sighing and pushing a hand tiredly through her hair. "You need to get up and just go. I can't do this right now."
So saying, she spun around to go back into her apartment and shut the door. But Ben sprang up and grabbed her elbow. "Please, Noelle! I'm ready to grovel if need be. Stand outside your door till you take pity on me and say you forgive me. It's you I love. We've been together a year and I was just waiting for the right time to propose. You finding about Heather was just a crazy fluke. I've already told her to seek new employment, because as of last week, she'd lost her position in my company."
Now that caught Noelle's attention, and she faced her ex again. "You fired her?"
"Yes," Ben said. "I was a fool. I have far more self-control than that, believe me. When I said that would be the last time I'll make that mistake, I meant it. So…will you accept my proposal? I promise you'll never regret it."
Noelle stared down at the ring. He still had it open in his hand, the diamonds winking at her. Then she had to look back up at Ben. "I honestly don't know what you want me to say. If it's forgiveness you're asking for, I forgive you. But showing up here to propose - don't you think that's a bit over the top?"
"No it's not," Ben urged. He held onto her hand imploringly. "They say you don't know a good thing till you lose it. It took this last week to realize I'm no good without you."
He lifted the hand to his lips and kissed it. "I know you care," he said softly. "You aren't the type to simply give up on anything or anyone. I know that if you wanted to, you can make this work the way it used to.
